About me

I work full time as a website administrator and am studying extramurally towards a Bachelor of Communication.

My first blog post illustrates my first experience of being part of an online community.

While I’ve only dabbled in social networks since then – and yes, looking at photos of my nieces was a prime driver for joining Facebook – that first, positive experience of an online social network fostered my fascination with how people interact online and how the dynamics of those interactions could be used to make new connections in the workplace, moving beyond the traditional organisation chart and giving people access to and connection with subject experts in other areas.

My role is all about presenting information in a useful, easy-to-understand way. Our organisation has recently dipped its toes into the world of social networks, both internally and externally, and we’re looking at ways to make social channels a valuable way of opening up conversations and working towards genuine collaboration, not just ticking the box that because we have a social media profile, we’re “doing” social networking.

For example, when those in different departments who share a common interest or skill are given a sanctioned opportunity to connect and collaborate, there are opportunities for people to upskill, and to gain confidence and validation in their expertise. Who knows, the outcome of this could include increased job satisfaction and a smarter, more connected and productive business.
